My dad bought one of these back in the late 80's. I was actually very suprised how capable it is out of the box. My memory is a little blurry but i believe it had locking diffs of some sort. The gearing was very, very, good. That was of course on stock tires. The size of the diff itself was the only thing that scared me. For a starter off road vehicle, I wouldn't shy away from one.

I've heard much the same thing. They are also available with PTO's. The lada is basically the Russian equivalent of the German Unimog, without the over-engineered build quality. The 'mog was designed to last forever, while the Lada was designed to be forever repairable with whatever was available.
